Kappa Delta Chapter at UMass Amherst

Where We Started...
In the Fall of 2007, two collegiate women, Claritza Batista and Yolimel Castillo, had an idea of bringing Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Incorporated to the University of Massachusetts Amherst. They recognized that the campus lacked an organization in which women of all backgrounds would be able to come together and gather in academic support of one another. They found that Sigma Lambda Gamma encompassed all their ideas, their values, and their vision for this campus. They began this journey by recruiting more dedicated women who were willing to bring the organization to the university.
In Spring of 2008, fourteen women formed an interest group named Leading Ladies and commenced the process of becoming a colony. With the guidance of Elena Torres, and constant participation on campus and in the community, the Leading Ladies petitioned for colony status on April 1st, 2008. On May 14th, 2008 the Leading Ladies were recognized as a colony of Sigma Lambda Gamma and continued to strive to become recognized on campus.
In Fall of 2008, with the direction of the University Administrators the Leading Ladies Colony became a Registered Student Organization. On October 4th 2008, eleven women became associate members of Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority. After hard work and dedication, they presented to the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) and were approved on November 5th, 2008.
On January 31st, 2009, all 11 women were initiated into the sorority. In the Fall of 2009, Melissa Lopes was initiated into the sorority as the UMass Colony's Alpha Line. After continuous hard work and devotion, the colony became nationally recognized as Sigma Lambda Gamma’s Kappa Delta Chapter on September 24th, 2010.
